Covid-19 latest: further rise in cases in Cork

The number of cases of Covid-19 being reported in Cork is continuing to rise.

The latest figures show that 1,595 Covid-19 cases have now been reported in Cork since the beginning of the outbreak with 28 of these cases reported so far this month (up to August 14th).

The number of cases reported for the first half of this month, is higher than the total number of Covid-19 cases reported in Cork in July when 27 cases were reported.

Last night, three people with suspected Covid-19 were being cared for at Cork University Hospital and the Mercy University Hospital.

One person with suspected Covid-19 was being treated at the critical care unit at CUH.

Nationally, 27,257 confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Ireland since the beginning of the outbreak.

A total of 1,774 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will meet today to review and discuss the Covid-19 case figures that have been reported in recent days.

Dr Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said that after the meeting, NPHET will make any necessary recommendations to Government which are required to protect the vulnerable, continue with the resumption of healthcare services and ensure the safe reopening of our schools.

“The phased reopening of the country has afforded people the opportunity to socialise with each other again. However, some are doing this recklessly and undermining the efforts of the majority of people around the country who are following public health advice. This cannot continue. This pandemic isn’t over just because we are tired of living with it,” he said.

“We must all learn to behave and interact in a new way over the coming months so that COVID-19 cannot take root again in our communities. Please avoid crowds, reduce your social contacts, keep your distance from others, wash your hands and wear face coverings,” he added.
