Historic Belvedere House in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath

Three of Ireland’s great historic houses are explored in Nationwide next week.

In the first episode on RTÉ1 on Monday at 7pm, Richard Downes heads to the Midlands, on the shores of Lough Ennell in Mullingar, where Belvedere House is situated.

He explores the rich history of the house and estate, while also discovering the extensive restoration work carried out on the mansion.

Richard also views the gardens and grounds of this place, which is now owned and managed by the Westmeath County Council.

In the second episode of Nationwide on Wednesday at 7pm, Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh travels to County Limerick to visit a castle that has remained in the same family for centuries.

The presenter meets the current custodians of Glin Castle, who are dedicated to preserving its history and heritage.

She also speaks with members of the local community with strong connections to the castle.

Nationwide also explores the castle’s magnificent gardens, which are the crowning glory on the estate.

The third episode of Nationwide on RTÉ1 on Friday at 7pm sees Bláthnaid in County Wexford to visit Loftus Hall, the imposing mansion that has dominated the landscape of the Hook Head Peninsula for generations.

She uncovers the fascinating history of the building, learns about the extensive restoration and conservation work currently underway, and hears about the ambitious plans for its future.

Bláthnaid also meets members of the team who are responsible for maintaining the estate, including those working in the beautifully restored walled gardens and surrounding grounds.
