A sneak peek at treats on TV this Christmas

Joanna Lumley and Tobias Menzies in A Ghost Story For Christmas: The Room In The Tower

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas... so here are some of the TV treats lined up for our living rooms this year.

AMANDALAND

Motherland fans are in for a special as this spin-off series, starring Lucy Punch, is making a surprise festive return.

Adding to the excitement, Joanna Lumley, who stars as Amanda’s glamorous mother, will be joined by her Absolutely Fabulous co-star Jennifer Saunders for the one-off special.

A second series of Amandaland will return to BBC1 in 2026.

CELEBRITY APPRENTICE

A host of famous faces step into Alan Sugar’s boardroom for two celebrity specials in aid of BBC Children in Need. The line-up includes Dublin podcaster Angela Scanlon, actor Jake Wood, and TV presenter Rob Rinder.

CALL THE MIDWIFE

The nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House are back with another festive special.

When senior members of the Nonnatus House staff head to Hong Kong on a mercy mission, the younger midwives are left to cope alone.

The action shifts between the sun-drenched Far East and a snowy East End.

THE SCARECROW’S WEDDING

For children, adaptations of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s stories have become a Christmas staple and this is the latest adaptation.

The half-hour animated special has an all-star voice cast, with Rob Brydon, Killarney’s Jessie Buckley, and Domhnall Gleeson, in a story about two devoted scarecrows planning a wedding to remember.

A GHOST STORY FOR CHRISTMAS: THE ROOM IN THE TOWER

Sherlock star Mark Gatiss has been behind this festive fixture since 2013, and Tobias Menzies and Joanna Lumley star in his latest chiller.

Set in the inter-war years, it is about a man haunted by an unsettling, recurring dream: An invitation to spend the night in the house of an acquaintance, where an unseen terror lurks and the figures who populate the dream seem to age in real time.

THE NIGHT MANAGER SEASON 2

Nine years after the first series aired, the series inspired by the characters in John le Carre’s best-selling novel returns, starring Tom Hiddleston as former UK intelligence operative Jonathan Pine. Olivia Colman also reprises her role as intelligence officer Angela Burr.

The second series, filmed in the UK, Spain, Colombia, and France, will premiere on BBC1 on New Year’s Day.
