Tell us about yourself.

I’m Amal Hope, a visual artist, and art and wellbeing facilitator based in Cork city, from the Middle East.

Creativity has always been central to who I am. My interest in human connection and visual beauty is rooted in my background in history, psychology, social studies, and art.

In 2024, I reconnected with the roots of my practice by facilitating art and wellbeing projects in Cork, following the completion of a Level 9 Certificate in Arts and Wellbeing at MTU Crawford College of Art and Design.

I currently facilitate workshops with several organisations, including The Glucksman Gallery at University College Cork, Cork Migrant Centre at Nano Nagle Place, and Cork County Council.

My artworks are part of private and public collections, including the Cork City Council Collection and the Office of Public Works.

My work is currently being shown at the Cork Printmakers Members Exhibition at Lavit Gallery, running until May 17.

My art is available for purchase through the Cork Printmakers online shop, or by contacting me directly via my website, amalhopeart.com.

I’m also proud to be a member of the Cork Printmakers’ Young Printmakers Programme (since 2021) and a member of Sample-Studios’ Studios of Sanctuary artist training and mentorship programme (since 2024).

Where were you born?

I was born in Jeddah City - Saudi Arabia.

Where do you live?

Happily living in Cork city.

Family?

I am one of four siblings, I am the second daughter among my sisters.

Best friend?

In Ireland, Julia, back home, Ahel, Hind and my sisters are my friends everywhere.

Earliest childhood memory?

My beautiful dresses that were specially designed for me by my mother, who was and still is a professional and passionate seamstress.

Person you most admire?

I most admire people who embody intelligence, kindness, happiness and respect. I value those who approach life with a positive and open-minded attitude, while also treating others with dignity and respect.

Person who most irritates you? The opposite of everything mentioned in the previous question.

Where was your most memorable holiday? In Spain, 2023.

Favourite TV programme?

I don’t have one specific programme, but I love watching anything about art, physics, or space.

Favourite radio show?

I don’t listen to the radio very often, but I enjoy it when I come across something interesting.

Your signature dish if cooking?

I’m not a big fan of cooking, but whenever I do cook for family or friends, they always have kind things to say. I love making pasta and shakshouka.

Favourite restaurant?

In Cork, I love Good Day Deli. Along with their great food and beautiful setting, the owners and staff are always so friendly and respectful.

Last book you read?

Deeper Mindfulness, by Mark Williams and Danny Penman.

Best book you read?

A book I read about 15 years ago that has stayed with me ever since is Brilliant Life by Michael Heppell. It had a profound impact on my sense of balance, outlook, and how I evaluate things in life.

One person you would like to see in concert?

Adele. Beyond the beauty of her voice, her presence and personality are just as wonderful.

Do you have a pet?

I had a beautiful cat named Nala. She brought so much joy and peace into my life.

Morning person or night owl?

I can’t really choose between the two. The season and place often decide for me. But usually, I love the mornings more. I love beginnings. And I love the stillness of the night. Both are magical times for me.

Your proudest moment?

This question always gives me pause because I’ve had so many proud moments, each marking a transition or growth in my life.

What truly stands out is how, at every stage, I’ve achieved personal milestones and found ways to make others happy. These moments, both big and small, have shaped who I am today.

For me, it’s not just about the accomplishments, but the ongoing journey of learning, evolving, and connecting with others in meaningful ways.

Spendthrift or saver?

I lean towards being a saver, however, I also believe in investing in things, experiences, and opportunities that enrich life and personal growth.

Name one thing you would improve in your area in which you live?

One improvement I would advocate for is the rethinking of building facades, particularly in service buildings.

Many buildings in the area look so similar that it becomes challenging to distinguish between them.

Additionally, given the ongoing housing crisis, I would support the development of existing buildings with the addition of extra floors. This could help address the growing demand for housing while maintaining the architectural integrity of the area.

What makes you happy?

Making art, playing with a cat, having mature and inspiring conversations with an interesting mind, trying new things, dancing, morning coffee, spending time with myself, my family, my friends.

How would you like to be remembered? She was right, and real. And made a way for those who have not found a way yet.

What else are you up to at the moment? At the moment, I’m focused on expanding and developing my art and wellbeing workshops. I’m in the process of putting together a comprehensive business plan to help these initiatives grow and reach a wider audience.

Additionally, I’m excited to be preparing for the upcoming Sample-Studios Annual Members Summer Exhibition, which will take place from July 24 to August 31, 2025, at The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion in Fitzgerald’s Park.
