A SECRET garden in the beautiful sunny Algarve was the backdrop to the wedding of Dawn Barry (nee Fitzgerald), from Bruree in County Limerick, and Richard Barry, from Charleville.
It was a far cry from the winter chilll here in Cork currently — but memories of that sunny day back on July 15 in Vidamar, Portugal, still warm the couple’s heart.
Dawn works in Novartis Ringaskiddy while Richard works in UCC, and the couple are living in a little cottage in Ballyhea with their two dogs, Mo and Gini.
They were friends throughout secondary school and both ended up going to CIT, and amid all the social whirl and studying, they ended up seeing each other.
Dawn recalled: “We got engaged on June, 1, 2018, in the Oliver Plunket bar in Cork city, which is where we had our first date when it was Scotts, about nine and a half years before.
“We then made our way to Fota resort for the night, in a limo, with some champagne and strawberries. It was all very romantic. He pulled out all the stops.”
They were married on July 15 in Vidamar resort in the Algarve in Portugal.
“It was a beautiful civil ceremony in a secret garden of the hotel.”
Dawn bought the dress of her dreams in Vows in Cork.
“It was a dramatic champagne-coloured mermaid style dress. I’d always had that style in my head... when I tried it on, we all knew straight away it was the one.
“As for my husband, anyone who knows him knows how much he loves suits and especially how good he looks in them. He went for a cream suit with a very faint pink and blue tartan check from Simply Suits in Cork. I think our guests were more excited about seeing his suit than seeing my dress.”
Joining them were their ‘two amazing mothers’, Marian and Bernie, and extended families, who all played a part in making their day so special.
Music played an important role on the day. Richard is a big Liverpool fan, so You’ll Never Walk Alone had to be played and all the guests sang along. “It was such a special moment and it ended up being everything we hoped it would be and more.”
Planning the wedding for the couple were A team Algarve, who were also the band, Double Cocktail, and the couple highly recommend them. Richard and Dawn want to say “thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who made the trip to share our special day with us. It would not have been the same without ye.”
