Wedding of the week: A magical and intimate day

THIS couple first met aged just 16, at a teenage disco in The Savoy on Junior Cert night. Emer O’Shea is from Vicarstown and Rob Timothy is from Coolowen, Blarney.

I THEE WED: Emer O’Shea and Rob Timothy were married at St Senan’s Church, Cloghroe on September 5, with reception at the Radisson Blu Hotel Little Island. Pictures: Eddie Hennessy

They dated as teenagers, before setting out on their own paths — Emer went to Mary Immaculate in Limerick, followed by teaching in Walterstown NS, while Rob went to UCC and moved to Galway, to begin his career in accountancy.

GROOM’S FAMILY: The newlyweds with his family, including parents Padraig and Margaret Timothy and his granny Caulfield, brothers Gary and Keith and sister Laura.

Their paths crossed again in 2016 when Rob was living in Dublin and Emer was home from Abu Dhabi. After a long distance romance, they handed in their notices and returned to Cork... where the rest is history!

The couple, who live in Kileens, were engaged during a trip abroad. Emer explains: “Rob knows how much I love musicals so he planned a surprise trip to Salzburg to do The Sound of Music tour at the end of November last year. He got down on one knee at the Christmas Markets in Munich.”

They were married at St Senan’s Church, Cloghroe on September 5, by Fr. Tom McDermott. Carrigtwohill Gospel Choir sang at the church, as Emer is a member.

SPECIAL GUEST: Emer O’Shea with her granny Mary Murphy, 90

The couple were due to get married in late October, but due to Covid-19 decided to bring the wedding froward.

Emer said: “We had the most perfect weekend from start to finish with 45 guests, while those who couldn’t be there were delighted to join us online. I can honestly say that having an intimate wedding was absolutely magical. It wasn’t what we originally planned but we genuinely wouldn’t change a thing. All you need is love, positivity and a little creativity.”

The bride wore a Jean Fox wedding dress from Brides of Éire, Clonakilty. She later changed into a ’50s style dancing dress from Pheonix V, Cork, a gift from her sister. Her shoes were from Ted Baker and were also ‘something blue’. She wore a Carrickmacross lace veil, handmade by her Nana O’Shea before she passed away.

“I was privileged to be the first of my family to wear it so it was ‘something old, new and borrowed’.”

The bridesmaids wore timeless black dresses from The Princess Rooms with a jacket from Folkster.

The bridal party included Maid of Honour, Niamh O’ Shea, bridesmaid, Aislinn Sexton, Best Man Gary Timothy and Groomsman Keith Timothy. The ring bearer and flower girl were Jack and Mary O’ Shea.

The bride changed into a different dress for the evening reception.

The reception was hosted in the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Emer said: “Joanne and Dori were amazing and took great care of us and our guests.”

The couple’s first dance was to After All by The Frank and Walters.

As to what was the most memorable thing about the day?

"Being surrounded by our nearest and dearest. The pure love and joy was palpable from the second I stepped into the church as those present were so grateful to be there," said Emer.
