"Without you, I would have been a goner"

The man who nearly gave up. The community that refused to give up on him. And the Christmas miracle that Cork people made possible
"Without you, I would have been a goner"

Imagine spending Christmas morning in a doorway, watching families pass by on their way to warm celebrations.

In the glow of Christmas lights and the warmth of family gatherings, it's easy to forget that for some, this season represents not joy, but the deepest isolation.

But this year, there's a story we need to share – a story about how the compassion of Cork people transformed one man's darkest winter into a new beginning.

"Without Cork Simon, I'd have been in big trouble. They saved my life, basically. And I know for a fact that I'm not the only one whose life they've saved."

These are Mark's words. And as we gather with loved ones this Christmas, they remind us of what this season is truly about: making sure no one is left out in the cold.

Last month, we shared Mark's story – the young man living in a broken-down car, battling epilepsy, isolation, and the brutal cold of an Irish winter.

The man who, at his lowest point, thought about giving up entirely. The man who spent Christmas alone, watching the world celebrate while he sat freezing in that car, wondering if anyone even knew he existed.

This Christmas, Mark's life looks remarkably different. Thanks to the sustained support and generosity of a Cork community that cares, Mark now has a place to live – safe, warm accommodation that he can afford.

Cork Simon could only help because kind and generous Cork people made it possible.

He has a roof that doesn't leak, walls that keep out the cold, a door he can lock, and a bed where he can finally sleep without fear.

"I was lost for so long," Mark remembers. "I was reaching out to all these people, and everyone was telling me 'we can't help you.' But Cork Simon was very, very helpful."

Cork Simon could only help because kind and generous Cork people made it possible. The journey from that broken-down car to stable accommodation wasn't quick or easy.

It took months of consistent support, advocacy, and practical help. Every step was made possible by the people of Cork, who decided Mark's life mattered.

What made the real difference wasn't just the practical support – crucial as that was. It was being seen. Being heard. Being treated with dignity and respect at a time when Mark felt utterly worthless.

"To just interact with the Cork Simon team, that kind of meant more than the food, to be honest," Mark says. "Just having that chat with someone."

That human connection flows directly from the values Cork people demonstrate through their generous support. Every donation represents more than money; it represents a community saying, "We see those who are suffering. We will not abandon them."

In the glow of Christmas lights and the warmth of family gatherings, it's easy to forget that for some, this season represents not joy, but the deepest isolation.

The two dogs who kept him company through those darkest days? They're still with him. The epilepsy that made sleeping rough so dangerous? He's getting proper treatment now. The loneliness that nearly destroyed him? He's discovered that Cork hasn't forgotten him.

"People brought me food when I was living in the car," Mark reflects with emotion. "People who didn't rush to judgement." It's their generosity and compassion that put Cork Simon's team right where they needed to be, right when they needed to be there.

This Christmas, as Mark sits in a place he can call home – warm, safe, with his beloved dogs beside him, he thinks about the journey that brought him here. About the neighbour who cared enough to make a phone call.

About the Cork Simon workers who kept showing up. And about the countless Cork people who made it all possible.

"I just want to say a massive thank you to all of you, honestly," Mark says, his voice breaking with emotion. "Without the likes of you, I would have been a goner."

Those words should resonate deeply this Christmas. Because they represent something remarkable: the power of a community to save lives simply by choosing to care.

But as grateful as Mark is for his second chance, many other lives still hang in the balance. This Christmas, there are men and women in Cork facing the same desperation Mark knew – sleeping rough, losing hope, wondering if anyone notices or cares, dreading the loneliness of Christmas Day.

Imagine spending Christmas morning in a doorway, watching families pass by on their way to warm celebrations. Imagine the despair of knowing that while others unwrap presents surrounded by loved ones, the only gift awaiting some people is another night of survival.

These heartbreaking scenarios don't have to be inevitable. This Christmas, Cork Simon is reaching out to more people than ever before, providing not just emergency support but the kind of sustained help that creates lasting change – help that leads to people finding their way out of homelessness and reclaiming their futures.

Mark's story could have ended very differently. What made the difference? The compassion, commitment and generosity of Cork people who refused to let someone slip through the cracks.

As Mark prepares for Christmas in his own place – a Christmas with his dogs safe beside him, with the terror and loneliness finally behind him, he carries with him the profound gratitude of someone who has been given the most precious gift: a second chance at life.

This Christmas, as we celebrate with our own loved ones, let's remember that the true spirit of the season lies in ensuring that no one is left out in the cold.

Through continued support of Cork Simon, generous Cork people can bring warmth, safety, and the gift of hope to those who need it most.

Together, we can make Cork a warmer place this Christmas – a city defined not by how we treat the fortunate, but by how we care for the vulnerable. Because everyone deserves a place to call home this Christmas.
