Women in Cork are being encouraged to take part in Marilyn’s Mater Paddle later this month.
Now in its third year, the event brings together patients, families, hospital staff and supporters from across Ireland for a fun, inclusive and uplifting event that supports women’s cancer care at the Mater Public Hospital.
Participants are invited to don their blonde wigs, channel their inner Marilyn, and take part in a gentle sea paddle, or simply soak up the atmosphere beachside, all while raising vital funds for women receiving cancer care at the Mater.
After the ‘Marilyns’ emerge from their sea dip, they will make their way back to the Shoreline Hotel for a chic ‘Marilyn Mixer’ party, with refreshments and swinging tunes.
Mary Golden, a Mater Hospital patient and third-time Marilyn said the event is about “joy, sisterhood and hope, and raising vital funds for women’s cancer care at the Mater. It reminds us to choose life, not fear.
“The Mater has been there for me every step of my cancer diagnosis. It’s wonderful to be able to help in any small way.
“Cancer is often the least glamorous experience, so it’s lovely for one day to feel a little glam and channel your inner Marilyn and show that cancer can take many things, but it can’t take your inner sparkle!”
Funds raised through Marilyn’s Mater Paddle directly support women’s cancer care at the Mater Public Hospital, helping to enhance patient treatment and supports, and contributing to world-class care for women attending the hospital from all over Ireland.
Speaking ahead of the event, Chief Executive of The Mater Hospital Foundation, Mary Moorhead said: “Marilyn’s Mater Paddle is a truly special event. Last year, we saw over 200 Marilyn lookalikes take to the shore, and we can’t wait to see how many dress up and fundraise for this incredibly important cause again this year at the Shoreline Hotel in Donabate.”
The event takes place on Sunday, May 24.
Registration for Marilyn’s Mater Paddle 2026 is now open.
Tickets are €25 per person, and participants receive a Marilyn pack including a wig, sunglasses and pin badge, along with entry to the paddle and post-event celebrations.
Individual and team sign ups available.
