The route attracts thousands of visitors from Ireland and all across the world each year, and it’s not hard to see why.

Stretching 40km through beautiful West Limerick, this scenic off road experience boasts rich heritage, biodiversity and the best local hospitality along the way.

Whether you’re looking for a family adventure, a romantic couple’s activity or a bit of solo ‘me time’ to take in the serene surroundings; there’s no limit to how you can choose to travel the route — with cyclists, runners and walkers all welcome on Limerick Greenway. The greenway was designed with mobility in mind, making it safe and suitable for users of all abilities and ages to visit and enjoy.

Since its opening, the route has drawn in more than 1.5 million visits and this summer there’s more for them to enjoy than ever before! Limerick Greenway is continuing to enhance visitor facilities throughout 2024, maintaining its current world-class offering while also providing something new to create a different kind of energy. 

Limerick Greenway was designed with mobility in mind, making it safe and suitable for users of all abilities and ages to visit and enjoy.

The greenway follows the old Limerick to Kerry railway line through rural West Limerick landscape, and incorporates five visitor hubs located at Rathkeale, Ardagh, Newcastle West, Barnagh and Abbeyfeale, providing excellent visitor facilities.

Visitors can start their journey at Rathkeale and do the full 40km route as far as Abbeyfeale; or can choose to join in at any of the entry points located along the way.

Visitors young and old, and of any and all mobility levels, are guaranteed to enjoy themselves.

Visitors also have the option to extend their journey by 10km from Abbeyfeale across the Limerick-Kerry border and onto Listowel, thanks to the Limerick Greenway connection with the Kingdom of Kerry Greenways.

Located under an hour from Kerry, Clare and Shannon Airport, under two hours from Galway and less than three hours from Dublin, West Limerick is the perfect place to explore and use as a base for any Irish break. Sonas Health Foods

Located 1.6km from Newcastle West Limerick Greenway Carpark, in the heart of Newcastle West town, Sonas Health Foods offers an array of local produce, wholesome foods, natural remedies and restorative tonics, with protein balls and coffee that are to die for!.

Wild Encounters Mini Zoo

Located just over 10km from Newcastle West Limerick Greenway Carpark, Wild Encounters is a small, zoo-licenced animal facility. It’s home to a range of exotic and domestic animals, many of which have joined as ex-pets from the exotic pet trade. 

The Ardagh Chalice

At Ardagh Greenway Hub Carpark on Limerick Greenway, visitors can revel in the history of the Ardagh Chalice, one of the greatest treasures of the early Irish Church. It is part of a hoard of objects found in the 19th century and is replicated by a wooden sculpture outside the Old Station House at the Hub.

Greenway Glamping

Looking for somewhere to stay that is a little different? Greenway Glamping in Templeglantine is your answer. Located less than 700 metres from the Limerick Greenway Carpark in Templeglantine, and with a third pod added to their two existing pods in recent weeks, embrace the unexpected and book a stay here.

Abbeyfeale Greenway extension

On the way to Abbeyfeale along the greenway, just after Templeglantine, the tranquil woodland of Tullig Wood is the ideal place to take a breath, relax in a peaceful environment and enjoy the scenery. Abbeyfeale is where you will find the final hub on Limerick Greenway and from here, visitors can travel to Listowel along the Kingdom of Kerry Greenways.

Limerick City and County Council continues to enhance visitor facilities on Limerick Greenway, as more and more people are choosing the recreational outdoor amenity along the old Limerick to Kerry railway line as their go-to activity.
