Wexford GAA is introducing water breaks during all championship matches this weekend as Ireland is officially in a heat wave.

John Kenny, GAA county chairperson, said the decision follows guidance issued in response to the forecast hot weather, with player welfare the primary concern.

Referees will stop play for approximately one minute midway through each half, allowing players to take on water and rehydrate.

Speaking ahead of the weekend's fixtures, Kenny said the measure is particularly important given that club players are amateurs competing in challenging conditions.

"We were advised to put this into our games over the weekend, so it's the right thing to do," Mr Kenny said.

He added that while players are well educated on hydration and preparation, the expected heat means extra precautions are necessary.

"It's so important that we hydrate properly. The players are well up to speed with all of this anyway, but with very high temperatures expected, plenty of water and sun protection are essential."

The announcement comes as the Wexford football championships continue across the county, with a full schedule of senior, intermediate and junior fixtures taking place over the weekend.

Supporters attending matches are also being encouraged to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and take extra care in the warm weather.
