A long-derelict former restaurant in Youghalcould be given a new lease of life under plans to transform the building into a cancer care and community support centre.
Planning permission has been sought by Youghal Cancer Support for the change of use of the former Tides Restaurant on Upper Strand, which has lain vacant for more than 15 years.
The former restaurant was once a popular dining venue in Youghal before closing. The prominent seafront building has remained derelict ever since.
The proposal would see the former restaurant, bar and bed and breakfast converted into a dedicated cancer care provision centre, offering physical and occupational therapies, a therapy gym, counselling suites and other support spaces for people affected by cancer.
The plans also include the creation of a community resource, training and support hub containing 12 flexible community rooms and associated support facilities.
As part of the development, the applicant is seeking permission for alterations to the building’s elevations, changes to the site layout and the provision of a private car park.
The application also proposes raising the existing car park boundary wall to 1.8 metres to provide greater privacy for people attending the centre.
Cork County Council is due to make a decision on the application by August 12. Members of the public have until July 23 to make submissions or observations on the proposal.
