A former DUP councillor is to run as a candidate for the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) in next year’s Stormont Assembly elections.

UUP leader Jon Burrows said he was “proud” that Kathryn Owen will run in the Belfast South and Mid Down constituency.

Owens is a senior health official and former RAF medic who was a DUP councillor for three years.

She left the party in 2021 following the election of Edwin Poots as leader.

Burrows said: “Kathryn brings a remarkable record of public service.

“She is a former RAF medic, a healthcare professional with a PhD in cardiovascular medicine, and is currently a senior health official working in public health.

“As a councillor she was widely respected for her commitment to her community and her ability to get things done, and during the pandemic she was a determined advocate for our local hospitals and the staff working under immense pressure.”

Owen said: “This is an area I know well, with roots right across the constituency, and it is a place I am proud to call home.

“I want to bring my experience in health, public service and local government to the Assembly.

“I believe good politics starts with listening, focusing on the issues that matter to people and delivering practical results.”
