Two people have been arrested after the army bomb squad attended the scene of a stopped car in Monaghan.

The Special Detective Unit stopped the vehicle travelling on the N2 south of Carrickmacross on Tuesday afternoon, as part of an operation targeting Dissident Republican activity.

The Defence Forces' Explosive Ordinance Team was called in, but Gardaí say they are not releasing the outcome for operational reasons.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 20s, was arrested, while Gardaí have since arrested a man in his 40s as part of the investigation.
