Teenager (17) who died after falling off e-scooter in Co Carlow named locally

A 17-year-old who died following an incident involving an e-scooter in Carlow town has been named locally.

Janis Ozols from Willow Park, Carlow Town, was involved in the incident which occurred between 8.30 pm and 9 pm, when two teenagers fell from the e-scooter while travelling on Carpenters Way.

Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of an incident and were on the scene within minutes.

Janis, a secondary school student, sustained serious injuries and was transported to St Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The second, an adult male in his late teens, was medically assessed at the scene.

He did not require immediate hospital treatment.

The scene remains preserved for forensic examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and the road is currently closed with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

Road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) from Carpenters Way around the time of the collision are also asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

Local Garda Superintendent Anthony Farrell said: “The single vehicle accident occurred at approximately 9pm in Carlow town. It occurred between Éire Óg GAA Club and Paupish Bridge”.

Garda investigations are ongoing.
