There has been an eight per cent increase in the number of women who were attacked in the first three months of this year, when compared to the same period last year, figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show.

There were 2,460 female victims of assault and related offences in the first three months of this year.

The number of male victims went up one per cent to 3,334, compared to the same period last year.

The number of assault victims increased overall by four per cent to 5,794.

Dangerous or Negligent Acts increased by six per cent compared to the same time last year, while Weapons & Explosives offences also increased by six per cent.

However, there were significant decreases in six of the 15 categories of serious crime in the 12 months up to the end of March this year.

Homicide and related offences were down 27 per cent over the 12-month period, while sexual offences decreased by 15 per cent.

Burglary and related offences dropped by nine per cent, while Robbery, Extortion & Hijacking offences saw a seven per cent decrease.
