A senior officer has been appointed to investigate how a powerful submachine gun fell from the boot of a Garda car onto a busy Dublin street.

The Irish Times reports that the Heckler & Koch MP7 fell from the vehicle onto the north quays in April.

It was seen by a member of the public who waved down a passing Garda vehicle and the bag containing the weapon and ammunition was safely recovered.

It was the second time a submachine gun is known to have fallen from the boot of a patrol car.

The same type of weapon was handed in after it was found in Dublin's south inner city in 2018.
