A woman has been left critically injured following a multi-vehicle crash near Castlegrace, Co Carlow, on Tuesday.

The crash, involving a truck and two cars, occurred shortly after 1:30pm at Bang-Up Cross in Tullow.

The driver of one of the cars, a woman in her 50s, was conveyed to St Luke's General Hospital, Kilkenny, for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the truck, a man in his 20s, was conveyed to hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at the time.

The driver of the other car, a woman in her 40s, was brought to hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at the time.

Superintendent at Carlow Garda Station, Anthony Farrell, is appealing for witnesses.

Speaking to Newstalk, he said: "An Garda Síochána are at the scene awaiting technical examination from Garda experts.

"Road diversions are in place and we'd advise motorists to avoid the area if at all possible. It's hoped the road will be opened around lunchtime.

"An Garda Síochána are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen this incident happen or in the immediate aftermath.

"If you have any information to support the Garda investigation, please contact An Garda Síochána Carlow."
