The bodies of a woman aged in her 30s and a female newborn baby discovered at a house in Co Tipperary have been removed to University Hospital Waterford.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene in Blackthorn Close in the Knocknaconnery area of Carrick-on-Suir after the alarm was raised by a man known to the woman at around 2pm.

Multiple units of the Gardaí, Fire Services and ambulances attended the scene.

It is understood that the woman, understood to be originally from Eastern Europe, and the baby may have died during an unsupervised home birth.

Gardaí preserved the scene pending the arrival of the state pathologist and are investigating all the circumstances behind the incident.

“An open mind” is being followed in the case by gardai, and they are following several lines of inquiry, but it is understood officers are treating the matter as a “personal tragedy”.

Gardaí established an incident room and have appointed a family liaison officer. Foul play is not suspected by gardai.

They are also seeking to contact relatives and will speak to neighbours and family members in connection with the investigation.

Post-mortem examinations on the woman and the baby are to be carried out at Waterford University Hospital (UHW) in due course.
