Over 3,000 drivers caught speeding over Bank Holiday weekend

Over 3,000 motorists were caught speeding over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Some of the highest speeds on Sunday included 138 km/h in a 50km/hr zone on Cashel Road, Cahir, Tipperary.

A motorist was recorded speeding 136 km/h in a 100km/hr zone on the N7, Brownsbarn, Dublin 22, while another driver was caught going 117 km/h in an 80km/hr zone on the N4, Doddsborough, Lucan, Dublin.

As part of a Garda Roads Policing Operation, 138 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Gardaí said they will be placing a particular emphasis on detecting those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Over 310 people have been detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt in the same timeframe.

Since this operation started on Thursday, one person has died following a collision in Co Donegal.

The number of fatalities on Irish roads this year is 43.

An Garda Síochána is urging road users to take extra caution around vulnerable road users, in particular pedestrians and cyclists.

Motorists are reminded to always drive within the speed limit.

Always wear a seatbelt and never use a mobile phone when driving. Keep distractions out of the vehicle and put your full attention on the road.
