Dublin's St Brigid's festival kicks off today

The streets of Dublin will see over 120 events celebrating the patron saint as St Brigid's festival kicks off on Friday.

The festival, which is in its fifth year running, celebrates women's contributions to Irish culture and society.

Running from Friday, January 30th until Tuesday, February 2nd, the Dublin City Celebrating Women's festival will see a range of events, including markets, workshops, talks, live performances, and walking tours.

The festival takes its name from the ancient Celtic goddess Brigid, who symbolises hope, renewal, nature and creativity.

There will be several workshops and participatory experiences during the festival, including a St Brigid’s Day sculpture workshop, inspired by the late Manchán Magan’s book, Ninety-nine Words for Rain (and One for Sun).

A poetry session inspired by Ribín Bríghid (St Brigid’s ribbon)/Brat Bríde (St Brigid’s cloak) will take place with poet Grace Wilentz at the Goethe-Institut Irland, alongside Fire in the Body: Story in the Room – a theatre workshop.

There will be Brídeóg doll-making, patchwork quilting inspired by Gerard Dillon’s Little Green Fields and creative workshops.
