A national charity for the elderly is calling on the public to check in on older family members and friends during the Christmas period.

ALONE is set to deliver 2,500 dinners to older people nationwide on Christmas Day.

Speaking on Newstalk, the chief executive of ALONE, Seán Moynihan, said the holiday period can be difficult for some people.

"I think, for all of us, Christmas is a reflective time, and ultimately it is when there's plenty of joy and parties," he said.

"But, if you have been bereaved this year, if you are isolated, or if you've suffered bouts of ill health, it's really difficult then for you to face Christmas on your own."
