A 62-year-old man who died in a house fire in Cork city has been named locally as Gary McCarthy.

Mr McCarthy was described as a loving father and grandfather by members of his family who posted tributes on social media in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The fire broke out at his house on Noonan's Road on the south side of the city at around 3.30am on Sunday.

Units of the Cork Fire Brigade and Gardaí were at the scene within minutes. Members of the fire brigade had to use breathing apparatus to enter the two-storey house.

Mr McCarthy was found unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom of the property.

He received treatment from paramedics at the scene before being transferred to Cork University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place. An investigation is underway. However, the indications are that the fire was accidental in nature.

The Gallows Bar on Bandon Road in Cork city posted a tribute to Mr McCarthy, whom they described as a “dear friend and neighbour to all who knew him.”

“(We have) many great memories with Gary and his family, who are in our thoughts now as the try to process what has happened. Our community spirit is needed here to support them at this incredibly difficult time.”

Mr McCarthy was a supporter of Leeds United FC. Funeral arrangements have yet to be finalised.
