The Irish Times Group has appointed serial entrepreneur  as its new chief executive.

Mr Moroney is an experienced CEO and entrepreneur with a distinguished career in the international technology industry. He founded and led two successful Irish-based software businesses, Clavis Insight and Similarity Systems, guiding them from start-up through to acquisition by major international companies.

Earlier in his career, Mr Moroney worked as a management consultant with McKinsey. He holds an MBA from Trinity College Dublin and a degree in Engineering from UCC.

Mr Moroney was named The Irish Times Business Person of the Month in December 2018.

Shay Garvey, Chair of the Board, said: “Garry’s experience in building digital-first businesses will help The Irish Times Group realise its ambitions in a competitive and rapidly changing media industry landscape. Through our award-winning, trustworthy and independent journalism, we will continue to inform and enrich the lives of our audiences.”

The company said Mr Moroney will officially take up his role on December 1st and work with Michael Sheehan, Interim Group Managing Director, until he resumes his role of Group CFO in January.

The Irish Times Group includes the eponymous news title, along with The Irish Examiner, BreakingNews.ie, MyHome.ie, RIP.ie, The Gloss, ScorBeo, and a portfolio of regional titles including The Western People, Roscommon Herald, Wateford News & Star, the Carlow Nationalist, Kildare Nationalist and Laois Nationalist. It also has a majority share in the WLR FM in Waterford.
