Motorists made a lucky escape when an unoccupied Range Rover jeep smashed into a pole in Waterford city.

The incident occurred at around 4:15pm on Saturday on the Inner Ring Road at the Ursuline Court roundabout close to student apartments.

Frantic efforts by the owner of the jeep were captured on dash-cam footage as he attempted to get into the moving vehicle.

An eyewitness said that “the vehicle came down through the grass from Ursuline court and hit a pole, which then fell down onto a car.”

The witness said: “ It’s a miracle nobody was hurt as it’s a very busy road and footpath.”

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene. No injuries were reported. It remains unclear how the jeep managed to free-wheel down onto the road from where it was parked.
