Chocolate worth an estimated €9 million will end up in the bin this Easter, according to new research from Too Good To Go.

Too Good To Go, an app that aims to reduce food waste by acting as a marketplace for surplus food, also found that almost 900,000 Easter eggs are wasted every year.

As well as this, almost nine in 10 people will have leftover meat after dinner on Easter Sunday.

Sales manager at Too Good To Go, Machalea O’Leary, said it is shocking.

Speaking on Newstalk, she said: "I think we all know the feeling of when you're looking at your Easter egg you probably haven't finished yet, you know, a quarter of the population say that they don't finish Easter eggs.

"But to think that, if you do out the maths, €9 million worth of Easter eggs go in the bins every Easter, it is really shocking."
