A prison officer was taken to hospital after being assaulted inside Mountjoy prison in Dublin.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon, gardaí said.

The prison officer was treated at the city’s Mater Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Garda said an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

Justice minister Jim O’Callaghan posted on X: “I am extremely concerned to hear that a prison officer was today seriously assaulted in Mountjoy prison.

“I wish him a full recovery and can assure people that this serious criminal offence will be investigated thoroughly so that justice will be done.”
