Poll: Does spring start in February or March?

According to the Irish calendar, which uses astronomical timing, spring starts on February 1st (Imbolc/St Brigid's Day).

However, according to Met Éireann, which uses meteorological timing, spring does not begin until March 1st.

The weather service said February is considered to be one of the three winter months for "climatological and meteorological purposes".

On the basis of air temperature, Met Éireann said the seasons are regarded as: December to February – winter; March to May – spring; June to August – summer; and September to November – autumn.

However, many Irish people will consider February 1st to be the first day of spring, due to traditions associated with Imbolc, or St Brigid's day.

Imbolc is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals, alongside Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain.

The Irish calendar recognises the seasons as: November to January – winter; February to April – spring; May to July – summer; and August to October – autumn.

So, when do you think spring starts and winter ends? Does February 1st mark the beginning of spring? Or is it March 1st? Take our poll and let us know!
