Man arrested and suspected firearm seized after incident at Connolly Station

A man has been arrested after a suspected firearm was reportedly seen on a train arriving in Dublin on Wednesday evening.

Gardaí said that shortly after 6.20pm it received a report of a male passenger with a suspected firearm on a commuter rail service arriving into Connolly Station.

The person is not alleged to have made any threat towards any passenger on board.

A large scale response involving several Armed Response Units was deployed to the Dublin station.

Connolly Station was evacuated “to ensure full public safety”, gardaí said, and a security sweep of both the station and the train on which the person was a passenger was conducted.

The station reopened at around 7.25pm as there were “no ongoing public safety issues”, gardaí said.

A man aged in his 50s was arrested at the scene and is being held at a Garda station in Dublin under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

The suspected firearm was seized and a full technical examination is due to be conducted to determine its status under Irish legislation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Store Garda Station on 01 666 8000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

“An Garda Síochána is aware of commentary in circulation online in relation to this incident which contains misinformation, disinformation and fake news.

“Once again, An Garda Síochána appeal to the public to independently verify any information that is shared on social media and/or sent through messaging sharing apps.”
