Man accused of Michael Foley's murder in Cork sent forward for trial

A man who is accused of the murder of Michael Foley in Macroom, Co. Cork in February has been sent for trial at the next sitting of the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

Daniel Hourigan, 31 with an address at Cork Simon Community, Mill House, Anderson’s Quay, Cork appeared before Judge Brendan O’Reilly at Clonakilty District Court.

Detective Garda Denis Curtin from Macroom Garda Station told the court that he had served the book of evidence on Daniel Hourigan.

Court presenter Sergeant Tom Mulcahy said that Mr Hourigan was facing a single charge of murder and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had consented to the accused being sent forward for trial before a judge and jury at the next sitting of the Central Criminal Court in Dublin, the date of which was yet to be confirmed.

Judge O’Reilly issued an alibi warning to Mr Hourigan that if he intended to rely on an alibi as part of his defence he must give notification to the prosecution within 14 days.

Defence solicitor Eddie Burke requested legal aid and the provision of one senior and one junior counsel. Judge O’Reilly accepted the request and sent the accused for trial at the next sitting in the Criminal Courts of Justice.

Mr Hourigan had been detained since February 16 when he was charged with the murder of Michael Foley, 61, whose body was found at his home at Annville, Barrett’s Place, Macroom on February 6th last.

A second accused in the case, Linda O'Flynn, 31 of Leeside Apartments, Cork was also charged with the murder on June 14 and is currently in custody awaiting directions from the DPP.
