Investigations are continuing after a Bus Éireann driver was shot in the face with an airgun in Limerick yesterday.

She was injured just below the eye after a gang of teenagers refused to pay their fare.

Fianna Fáil Senator Mary Fitzpatrick recently called for community gardaí to include an hour of policing public transport on each shift.

The local service has been suspended and the National Bus and Rail Union is among several organisations condemning the attack.

Ms Fitzpatrick told Newstalk: "We need to have a situation where public safety is guaranteed, where the public can travel on transportation without fear of attack... and where those working on public transport and other frontline services feel that they can go to work and provide the essential service they are providing without fear of physical or verbal attack."
