New Lord Mayors elected in Dublin and Cork

Fine Gael's James Geoghegan has been elected as the new Lord Mayor of Dublin.

The 39-year-old was appointed to the role at a meeting of Dublin City Council in City Hall on Friday evening.

The Ranelagh man becomes the 356th Lord Mayor of Dublin, succeeding Cllr Daithí de Róiste.

In Cork, Cllr Dan Boyle was elected to become the new Lord Mayor.

The Turners Cross-based Green Party councillor was elected with 22 votes at Cork City Hall.

Cllr Boyle announced fellow Green Party member, Cllr Honore Kamegni, will be the Deputy Lord Mayor.

Meanwhile, Cllr Baby Pereppadan has been elected as the new mayor of South Dublin County Council.

The Fine Gael councillor, who represents Tallaght South, succeeds Cllr Alan Edge in the role.

Cllr Alan Hayes, an Independent from Palmerstown-Fonthill, has been elected as the new deputy mayor.

In Fingal County Council, Labour's Brian McDonagh was chosen as the new mayor, with Fianna Fáil's JK Onwumereh elected as deputy mayor.
