Storm Gerrit: Met Éireann issues new alerts with unsettled weather to last until New Year

Unsettled weather is expected to continue on Wednesday and the rest of the week, with more warnings in place in several counties as Storm Gerrit hits Ireland.

A status orange wind alert for counties Clare, Cork, Kerry and Galway will come into effect at 3pm on Wednesday and last until midnight.

Further warnings for wind and rain remain in place for the rest of the country until midnight.

Gale force winds, intense downpours and spring tides are likely to cause flooding in coastal areas, Met Éireann said.

On Thursday, a status yellow wind warning will be in effect all day until the early hours of Friday, covering Clare, Kerry, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has urged road users to exercise caution when travelling while the warnings are in place.

The outlook remains bleak for the rest of the week, with cold and unsettled weather on Thursday and Friday. The weekend will begin with very strong winds in the north and west, and cold temperatures leading to frost and ice on Saturday night.
