A cyclist has been seriously injured follow a hit-and-run incident in Dundalk, Co Louth.

The cyclist, a man aged in his late 20s, was injured when he fell from his bike and was hit by a passing vehicle on the Castletown Road shortly before 2pm on Monday.

Gardaí said the car failed to remain at the scene of the collision.

The cyclist was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Dundalk where he was treated for his injuries which are non-life threatening.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward.

Anyone who was in the Castletown Road area of Dundalk between 1.45pm and 2.30pm and who noticed any unusual activity are being asked to contact Dundalk Garda station on 042-938 8400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666 111, or any Garda station.
