Marvel has announced it will release a new Ghost Rider film starring Ryan Gosling as the titular motorcycle-riding anti-hero.

The film, to be released in 2028, will be the third about the character, following the 2007 film of the same name starring Nicolas Cage in the title role, and its follow-up Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance in 2011.

Unveiling the project at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said he was often asked when Drive actor Gosling would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, before introducing the Canadian on stage.

Gosling told the cheering crowd: “Wow, is this really happening? As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time.”

The actor has publicly spoken about his desire to play Ghost Rider, and confirmed on the Happy Sad Confused With Josh Horowitz podcast in March that he was in discussions with Marvel.

The film will be directed by Shawn Levy, whom Gosling described as the “only” director for the project.

Levy directed Deadpool And Wolverine for Marvel and is currently working with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter.

The director said: “As Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing, and I finally said, ‘bro, let’s ride’, so guys, we’ll see you in 2028.”

Ghost Rider is the superhero alias of motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze, who becomes bound to the Spirit Of Vengeance Zarathos after making a deal with villain Mephisto to spare his surrogate father, giving him superpowers.

Gosling, 45, who is married to actress Eva Mendes, is also well known for roles in La La Land (2016), Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and Barbie (2023).

Levy has also directed comedy films including Big Fat Liar (2002), Just Married (2003), Cheaper by the Dozen (2004), The Pink Panther (2006) and the first three Night At The Museum films.
