St John’s Eve, June 23, is Bonna Night in Cork city, a celebration dating back to pagan times, and it was, in years past, a tough assignment for fire crews and gardaí.

A major fire at the former convent building in Skibbereen has been "substantially extinguished", however fire crews remain at the scene tonight damping down hotspots.

Members of the Cork city fire brigade rescued a person from the river in Cork city this evening. The alarm was raised at around 9. 20pm this evening after a person was spotted in the water near the Mercy University Hospital.
