Whitechurch native Tiernan Burke has become the first new transitional deacon in Diocese of Cloyne for eight years.

Bishop Crean was addressing the last event of Féile na Laoch in Séipéal Ghobnatan, an event entitled Dóchas – Solas Críost/Hope, or the Light of Christ.

The Bishop of Cork and Ross delivered a homily to almost 600 Irish young people at the Instituto Santa Maria in Rome.

Other events during the week-long pilgrimage include evening gatherings at the Instituo Santa Maria, at which there will be guest speakers, including prominent Catholic personalities.

The bishop said he would continue to be grateful for the priests' willingness to minister in new ways with colleagues and with people in Families of Parishes.

Bishop Gavin described Fr Oscar O'Leary OFM as a "real companion and friend" to the Traveller community and said he was grateful to come to know him since his ordination as bishop six years ago. 

A native of Belgooly near Kinsale, Fr Charlie was ordained by Bishop John Buckley on June 4, 2000, and he has been the parish priest in Mayfield since 2020.
