Strictly champ set to entertain you on Cork stage

20 Years On, the big annual show from Centre Stage School of Mallow is at the Opera House tonight, (Thursday, February 29) starting at 7pm.

Tomorrow night, March 1 (is it that time already?) podcasters and broadcasters Spencer Matthews and Vogue Williams are on stage for their first live tour in Ireland.

Breathe, the Pink Floyd Experience on Saturday, will be playing classics from The Dark Side of the Moon, while on Sunday there is a wonderful opportunity to see the Ukrainian Ballet for Peace company with The Sleeping Beauty. Two performances, 2pm and 8pm.

Next Wednesday and Thursday, Strictly Come Dancing champion and BAFTA winner, Giovanni Pernice, brings a world class cast of professional dancers and West End performers in Let Me Entertain You. A likely sell-out too!

An interesting, thought-provoking premiere is coming up at the Everyman next week with Gatman, written and performed by Tadhg Hickey and directed by Sophie Motley. This one-man monologue play takes us through a day with Murph as he wanders the streets of Cork, interacting with his imaginary superhero of the title, who acquires his amazing powers through alcohol. And Father Mathew comes to life too!

Exploring the metamorphic effect of alcohol, the play has themes of addiction, abuse and trauma, so is recommended for 16+. Thursday to Saturday, March 7-9, at 8pm.

And don’t forget the second of the three-part series Music Of… continues at the Everyman, when John O’Brien presents Music of… Love and Heartache on Sunday, March 10. West End sensation Molly Lynch and the enchanting harpist Anne-Marie Papin Labazordiere will move you to tears with their exquisite interpretations. 7.30pm start.

At Cork Arts Theatre this week, Big Guerilla Productions present a new play written by Seamus O’Rourke, The Ballad Of Mossy Flood. Mossy might be an unsociable odd-ball with a thick head, but his wrestle with the everyday is pure gold.

The Corner House in Coburg Street is well known for live gigs, and that popular group, We’re Them Now, are there tomorrow, March 1. Members are Brendan Butler on voice, mandolin, electric and acoustic guitars. “Our music has a cool, swinging, country blues vibe,” says Brendan. 

A mixture of original and alt country songs, plus country interpretations of traditional bluegrass.

Speaking of live music, Wasps vs Humans launch their new single, Price You Pay, described as “an ode to existential crisis”, with a special pre-release gig at the Crane Lane Theatre tonight. The new single is available to download through their bandcamp page from tomorrow, as well the usual online platforms.

Gaining a reputation on the live circuit for their high octane performances, WvHs are an anarchic mix of drums, bodhrán, whistles, punk poetry, songs and beats, featuring punk poet, drummer and guitarist Carl Antony Plover and singer, bodhrán and whistle player Linda Plover, who will be joined by Irish harpist, Mairead Kelly. 8pm start.

That will be followed by Fiesta Latina from 9pm.
