There's a lively Spring programme at Cork's theatres

Shadow Of A Gunman is at the Everyman on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 13/14.

THE Everyman has a lively spring programme lined up, with plenty to choose from, whatever your taste.

If you missed A Night With Adele last Friday (and plenty did, it sold out pretty quick) they have managed to book the show for a second night this Sunday, February 11.

Whoops, hold that advice, that night is now also sold out!

London African Gospel Choir perform at the Opera House tonight, Thursday, February 8.
London African Gospel Choir perform at the Opera House tonight, Thursday, February 8.

Tonight and tomorrow, the fascinating piece Dances Like A Bomb by Junk Ensemble celebrates the strength of mature bodies while it challenges the cult of youth. That great actor Mikel Murfi partners with leading dance artist Finola Cronin (formerly of Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal), Warning: on stage smoke effects. 8pm start.

Chris Kent is at the Everyman on Saturday night with Back At It, in which he tried returning to the real world but found it didn’t work. An effortless storyteller and wonderful comedian.

If you miss it this week, they have coaxed him back on May 24 to repeat the dose of laughter.

The big one you really mustn’t miss, though, is coming up next week, when Druid Theatre blast into town with Shadow Of A Gunman, directed by Garry Hynes, on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 13/14, at 7.30 pm.

To maintain O’Casey’s piercing tension, there will be no interval. But since it’s set in the War of Independence, you can expect, naturally, depictions of violence and war, with gunshots and other loud noises.

And, just to show how far we’ve progressed (if that’s the word) from the 1920s, on Thursday next, February 15, brings investigative journalist Nicola Tallant with Cocaine Cowboys, following the deals, the successes and the catastrophic mishaps along the trail of white lines from the jungle labs of South America to our own Wild West drug frontier. Recommended for 18+ that one, unsurprisingly.

Isn’t the Everyman giving us a rare variety of shows from which to choose? Booking on 021 450 1673 or www.everymancork.com.

If it’s peace and beauty you yearn for, the Opera House might be the answer tonight, when the London African Gospel Choir perform their exquisite rendering of Paul Simon’s iconic album, Graceland, first released in 1986.

In the wake of Graceland’s 30th anniversary, Camden’s Jazz Café commissioned the London African Gospel Choir to perform the album in its entirety for one night only. Tickets sold out within hours so five more nights were added. Grab this chance to experience their incredible sound.

However, if nostalgia of a more local kind is your thing, then Remembering Joe tomorrow night, presented by the Dolan family, could be just what you want. Hard to believe, but though it’s 16 years since he left us, his music is as popular as ever.

Joe’s brother Ben, who shared the stage with his younger brother for 47 fun-filled years, will be joined on stage by Joe’s niece, Sandra, nephews Adrian and Ray, singer Karen Carroll, and members of Joe’s original backing band. Last few tickets!

Yet another genre of song on Saturday when The Three Tenors are here, and even more the following Wednesday, February 14, when we have the operatic treat of La Tragedie de Carmen, semi-staged and directed by John O’Brien, conducted by Peter Shannon. What a dizzying week for music-lovers of Cork! Gotta hand it to the Opera House for its programming, that’s for sure.

Lighter fare at Cork Arts Theatre this week and next, with Sexy Laundry, by Michele Riml. A practical look at middle-aged marriage when efforts have to be made to keep the intimate side burning, it stars Fionula Linehan and Ciarán Bermingham, directed by Trevor Ryan. Not really suitable for under 16s, this. Until Saturday, February 17. 8pm start. Call 021 450 5624 or see www.corkartstheatre.com.

And just in, welcome news that The Rapparees will be at the Opera House on their Easter tour on March 29, with tribute show, Fairytale Of The Pogues, Tickets on sale now!
