In the film, ET was a friendly chap, but Trevor Laffan fears real-life aliens may not be as cute and friendly

There is an association called CERO in France which brings people together who claim to have met aliens.

The group facilitates those who believe alien beings have made contact with them down here on Earth.

They welcome, listen, support, inform, and promote meetings and exchanges between people who have had an experience of contact and/or abduction with ‘extraterrestrial’ entities. They describe on their website what a typical interaction looks like.

The event or episode usually takes place in the middle of the night when the subject is lying in bed. A companion sleeps next to him/her when, suddenly, he feels a strong foreign presence in the bedroom or other location in the house.

Sometimes he hears footsteps on the roof, in the living room or somewhere else. Sometimes a light appears and fills the room, and the subject suddenly feels paralysed - he can no longer move or scream. He is terrified.

The roommate is still sleeping. Suddenly, beings surround the bed. They communicate telepathically and suggest that the ‘victim’ calm down. This happens instantaneously, and the subject suddenly feels soothed.

Beings then transport the person (by levitation) and the body passes through the glass or the wall, etc. and enters a vessel. They are placed on a medical table and undergo a physical examination and possibly some experiments.

At the end of all this, the subject is brought back to their bed and the UFO and its occupants leave.

The abductee regains his movements while, all this time, the companion does not wake up during the whole experience.

Once the experience is over, the abductee is often in the grip of an intense emotional discharge or frozen in a defensive prostration. When the person wakes up, they are in bed, certain that something has happened during the night, or on the contrary, with a strange indifference to what has happened.

Now, if you ever experience something like this, please don’t contact me about it. I suggest you get in touch with CERO, but a visit to your GP might not go astray either.

I don’t know about you, but I’m certain if I was abducted by aliens there would definitely be a discharge of some kind. I’d be absolutely terrified.

I’m a light sleeper so I think I’d probably wake up and make a bit of a fuss. Or maybe just pass out at the sight of them, who knows?

Anyway, I reckon I’m safe enough. If they were searching for signs of intelligent life, they would hardly seek me out. It’s more likely they would look elsewhere and that scenario might not be as far-fetched as you might think.

There’s a lot of study taking place into the prospect of aliens coming to Earth and many have already claimed to have met beings from outer space.

There is a thing called the Zoo Hypothesis which suggests that other civilisations might be interested in humanity with the same view as humanity is fascinated by animals within their own habitats at the zoo.

A scientist proposed the idea that alien civilisations may have a valid reason not to interfere while keeping us under observation, and opt not to come near us to interfere with us physically.

So alien life forms could be just monitoring us from a distance to see what we’re like. The important question though is, are they friend or foe?

Many scientists are positive about the chances of life existing in the universe. A leading British scientist says she has a definitive answer. Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock, a space scientist and presenter of The Sky At Night, says that humans must not be the only life forms in the universe.

She argues that it is an example of ‘human conceit’ that we should think otherwise, and she claims that science’s discoveries about the size of the universe make it impossible for humans to be alone.

But nobody knows for sure if there’s intelligent life out there or not. Many of us, including me, are quick to dispel the notion and would say it’s all nonsense, despite having spent years watching Captain James T. Kirk dealing with strange creatures in faraway frontiers, going where no man had gone before.

But who knows? Maybe some of that was based on inside knowledge?

It’s such a vast Universe, we can’t possibly understand what’s happening in every piece of it.

The Hubble space telescope revealed there are about 200 billion galaxies in space, so maybe strange life forces could come calling, and if that happens, we need to be ready.

According to Listverse.com, there are some do’s and don’ts when it comes to dealing with extra-terrestrials, and I’m making notes just in case I find some of them sitting in my kitchen some day.

The first thing is not to worry about being robbed because if these guys have figured out how to get here, they surely have the power to take what they want, and you won’t be able to stop them.

Secondly, don’t worry about them zapping you with their beam weapons or whatever they might have, because if they wanted you dead you would be vapourised before you even saw them.

Thirdly, do not panic if you are abducted by aliens. Easier said than done, but the experts say the last thing you should do is act in a threatening manner.

Once the aliens have established that you are intelligent and are actively trying to communicate with them, your value to them increases.

Unless they happen to encounter some of our more notable less intelligent life forms, which would probably send them scurrying back where they came from.

Finally, this last piece of advice is crucial. If you’re ever abducted by aliens, bring some proof back home. A few good quality selfies will do, and you’ll be made for life.
