As we look ahead, one of Cork’s most exciting opportunities lies in renewable energy, says Conor Healy, Chief Executive of Cork Chamber. Pic Darragh Kane

Cork’s economy is thriving. We have seen strong growth, particularly in sectors like pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, ICT and professional services.

However, the year just gone has not been without challenges. Housing shortages, urban revitalisation, cost of doing business and sustainability goals, are pressing issues that require immediate and ongoing commitment.

Cork stands on the cusp of an even brighter future, one that requires a focus on strategic priorities and a collaborative effort to unlock its full potential. Central to this progress is the strength and diversity of the business community.

Our 1,200 members range from global multinationals to small, family-run enterprises and innovative start-ups, employing over 130,000 people across the city and county. This diversity shapes our work and advocacy, ensuring we reflect the needs and aspirations of the entire business community. Whether it’s fostering entrepreneurship, supporting SMEs, or advancing infrastructure projects, we work to champion policies that enable businesses of all sizes to thrive.

The balance between Cork city and county is fundamental to the region’s success. Our strength lies in the dynamic relationship between a vibrant urban centre and a county rich in enterprise, talent, and innovation. Businesses across the region are interconnected, and as such, policy decisions must benefit both. Investment in transport systems, such as light rail and suburban rail, will seamlessly connect city and county, enhancing accessibility, supporting employers, and boosting growth opportunities.

As we look ahead, one of Cork’s most exciting opportunities lies in renewable energy. Cork has the potential to lead Ireland, and indeed the world, in green energy innovation. Our strategic location around Cork Harbour makes it an ideal hub for offshore wind energy and other renewable projects.

This is the opportunity of our generation, with the potential to transform our economy, secure energy independence, and contribute to global sustainability goals. We are working closely with the business community, local and national stakeholders to align ambitions and importantly to bring policy and infrastructure in line to facility the harnessing of this huge opportunity.

Collaboration is central to everything we do. Cork Chamber works closely with chambers across Ireland to address shared challenges and explore opportunities that benefit the entire country. Through Chambers Ireland, we advocate on national issues, and our new Tri-Region Partnership with Dublin Chamber and the Northern Ireland Chamber amplifies our collective voice for an all-island approach to economic development. Together, we address shared challenges, such as housing, sustainability, and skills development, while ensuring that the unique needs of each region are recognised and addressed.

Through this collaborative we can create outcomes that extend beyond our region, strengthening the island of Ireland.

At Cork Chamber, we are deeply committed to advocating for our region and driving sustainable growth. We advocate for policies that align with Cork’s long-term vision, whether that’s investing in renewable energy, addressing housing shortages, or ensuring Cork remains an attractive destination for foreign direct investment. We have also been appointed an SDG Champion, which reflects our commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

We are very proud of the strong relationships we have with key stakeholders. We are looking forward to renewed energy with the new government, and we have continued to advance the agenda for Cork.

Feedback from our members is clear on priorities – and some of these are interconnected. Housing delivery, urban revitalisation, and investment in public transport are immediate priorities.

We are also calling for greater support for renewable energy, including the necessary infrastructure to make Cork a leader in this space. Planning reform affects much of the needed developments and needs to be addressed. Talent and skills continue to remain a priority and is a key enabler for economic growth. With the recent pressures on business and in particular SMEs, it is essential that the next government will be practical in addressing the pressure points.

Looking ahead, I remain confident in Cork’s future. The resilience, innovation, and ambition demonstrated across our business community are what make this region truly exceptional. Every business, no matter its size or sector, has a role to play in shaping the Cork of tomorrow. By focusing on sustainability, championing innovation, and fostering collaboration, we can enhance Cork’s reputation as a global leader and a model for success.

At Cork Chamber, we are dedicated to supporting this progress and driving initiatives that strengthen our city and county. Together, we can amplify Cork’s strengths, overcome challenges, and create a thriving, inclusive region that sets new standards in economic growth, quality of life, and environmental sustainability.
