IN the midst of difficulty often lies opportunity. The last few months have proven to be a difficult time for all resulting in drastic changes to our way of living. Now we look to new innovative ways of doing businesses and promoting quality of life for all. As Chief Executive of Cork County Council, my role is to identify and drive opportunities which will support our residents, citizens and businesses in their success.
As we progress through the Government’s Reopening Roadmap where businesses, retailers and communities are emerging from the Covid-19 pandemic, Cork County Council has created a unique, interactive ‘Rediscover Cork County’ map which provides, at the touch of a button, a wide range of information on attractions and activities to avail of from across the county.
Over 600 offerings are available on the map which is accessible across all mobile devices. One of its key features is the ‘Near Me’ button where you can give your current location or town of preference within a radius of up to 100 kilometres. The map will then provide information on nearby activities and prospective points of interest within that area as well as generate directions to an attraction or activity of your choice. Up to 12 categories can be filtered such as attractions, activities, gardens, beaches, family fun, heritage and food experiences plus many more.
Now is an opportune time for a map of this kind to be delivered. We have one of the most picturesque counties in the country. From rugged coastlines to mountain vistas, sandy beaches to scenic landscapes, we are extremely fortunate to have such a variety of natural resources which are capable of catering to the requirements of any visitor. The ‘Rediscover Cork County’ interactive map will identify such spots, enabling the user to spend leisure and holiday time in a county with vast, open, spacious and safe areas, especially important as this time where physical distancing is so important.
This myriad of landscapes is mirrored across the variety which exists in our towns and villages. Busy town streets can be found short distances from quiet charming villages. All of this exists across a word class heritage offering which is literally on display at every turn, medieval ruins can be discovered on the same journey as a world renowned landmark.
Cork County Council had been planning on delivering a service such as this interactive map for some time. The changes in travel and ultimately tourism as a result of public health measures fast-tracked this delivery and focused our attention on generating awareness of the first class offering we have available right here on our own doorstep while encouraging everyone to ‘Rediscover Cork County’.
This initiative is one of a suite of measures delivered by Cork County Council under Project ACT, or Activating County Towns. Project ACT is a dedicated programme to support businesses and communities in regenerating the economy across Cork’s towns and villages.
Local Town Teams, consisting of a wide range of local stakeholders, were established to ensure a coordinated and collaborative community led approach. One of the recurring themes mentioned under Project ACT was the promotion of local areas to create awareness of the range of offerings available for both locals and visitors alike. The ultimate aim being to rebuild confidence across the county from a business and consumer perspective.
The Rediscover Cork County Interactive Map will play a crucial role in rebuilding this confidence. The interactive nature of the map makes it a one stop shop enabling the user to discover all that is on offer within Cork County from any address, any hotel or any accommodation provider. A wide range of information on the chosen location together with directions to any of the activities on offer within that location, whether it’s a tour, visitor centre, heritage site, water or land based activity is all discoverable quickly and easily.
Quite often we do not notice what a variety of unknown treasures exist literally on our doorstep. A stunning vista, a quirky smaller shop full of unique handmade items, a café with delicious tasting local produce, all existing right across our county waiting to be discovered.
Supporting these enterprises as well as our wider hospitality and retailing sectors we can create an all-encompassing approach to re-booting our own local economy and jobs. Where employing locally and supporting local enterprises create sustainable micro-communities, enabling them to prosper and thrive.
The Rediscover Cork County Map is also aligned with the Pure Cork tourism brand, with information on accommodation and dining out options, creating a live interactive mapping engine which is in effect a personal tourism and activity guide to Cork County. The user picks what they want to do and where they want to go, with a host of suggestions made available to choose from.
I would encourage everyone to rediscover Cork County for themselves and see what hidden gems exist across our county. While the map provides a significant amount of up to date information on what is available throughout Cork County we also welcome feedback on the platform. Any suggestions or additions can be included by emailing email@example.com
