Glen Rovers’ AIB Munster Club SHC hopes were ended at the first hurdle as they lost to Clare’s Inagh-Kilnamona in Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday.
Before a crowd of 2,890, the Glen never led at any stage, falling 0-7 to 0-1 behind in the early stages as the visitors – for whom Aidan McCarthy finished with 14 points – made the most of the elements behind them.
Having struggled to make attacking inroads, the Glen fell ten points behind, 1-12 to 0-5, when David Mescall set up Clare senior David Fitzgerald for a goal for the Clare champions in the 26th minute.
While that was replied to by a Patrick Horgan goaled free in first-half injury time, the Glen could not come closer than four points in the second half.
So impressive in ending a decade-long wait for the county championship, the Glen struggled to rediscover that momentum, especially in a first half where they took time to find their feet. Where goals had been such a strong currency for the northsiders domestically, too often they were unable to break down a good Inagh-Kilnamona defence, while the half-back line for the men in gold and green gobbled up any wayward Glen deliveries.
In the second quarter, the Glen began to get more joy in exchanges around the middle and Horgan's frees brought them slightly closer before Fitzgerald's goal opened up that ten-point gap.
That deficit could have become even greater but for a poor miss from a free by McCarthy as half-time approached and the Glen were given a lifeline in injury time.
When Dean Brosnan’s driving run was illegally halted, Horgan went for goal from the free and drilled it high, passed the massed Inagh-Kilnamona ranks on the line.

Within two minutes of the restart, a pair of Horgan frees had the Glen to within five. While McCarthy had Inagh-Kilnamona’s first point of the second half, Horgan set up Lee Quilligan for his second point of the game and then had his sixth, fifth from a free, to leave it 1-13 to 1-8 after 38 minutes.
Though a good point from impressive midfielder Mark Callinan did have Inagh-Kilnamona six ahead at the three-quarter mark, the overall trend was of the gap reducing, with Horgan’s dead balls augmented by points from Michael Tadgh Brosnan and Eoin O’Leary. Brosnan had not featured in the county championship due to a local rule preventing U18s from lining out above junior A level but he gave a good account of himself on his senior debut.
That latter’s point had them back within four, 1-17 to 1-13, by the 50-minute mark but once again Inagh-Kilnamona were able to produce a response.
An excellent Fitzgerald point was followed by two from McCarthy, one a free, as they pushed seven ahead again. Eoin Downey reduced the gap to six before Horgan had to try to repeat his first-half feat in going for a goal from a free again.

Eamonn Foudy in the Inagh-Kilnamona goal saved brilliantly and the resultant 65 came to nothing, with McCarthy’s 14th point of the day rounding off the scoring for the victors.
They now advance to face Thurles Sarsfields in the semi-final in a fortnight.
