It was an extraordinary conclusion to this cup tie, with Coachford B ultimately emerging victorious 15–14 in a dramatic penalty shootout over Hibernians following a 1–1 draw after extra time in the Munster Junior Shield third round at Shanbally.
The match was a gruelling struggle for long stretches, with both sides failing to create clear-cut chances before the dreaded penalty shootout ultimately settled the tie.
Following a chaotic start, defined by dense congestion through the middle, Eoin Daly won good possession before trying to find Evan Barry with a cross, but when this failed to transpire, the ball broke for Simon Doyle, who failed to connect with the necessary conviction as Colm Kennelly picked with ease.
Dylan Kelleher then saw his effort sail wide at the other end.
And when Josh Martin headed wide from a long throw, Nathan Martin tried one from distance, but it never bothered Murphy.
Shane Keegan did well to control with his chest before swivelling to fire straight at Kennelly, and when Josh Martin tried to hook one on for Dara Fehily, Steven Murphy was quickly off his line to smother the danger.
This was followed by a crisply struck effort by Tadgh Bradley from a free kick that forced Murphy to make a solid save.
Then, from Brendan Harrington’s long throw, Dara Fehily leaped highest, but guided his effort beyond the post.
The first real chance of note though in the tie fell to Coachford – Tadgh Bradley’s free kick reached Dylan Kelleher, who brought a superb save from Steven Murphy from his forceful header.
Eoin Daly then exchanged passes with Josh Tawadrous before firing his shot-come-cross wide.
Hibs produced a neat move from the back which ended with Eoin Daly finding space behind the Coachford rear-guard, but a top-drawer tackle by Tadgh Bradley saved the day.
Following a corner soon after, Hibs were awarded a penalty following a hand-ball incident in the box, and from the spot, Derek Heaphy made no mistake when he planted his effort into the corner on the stroke of half-time.
With just two minutes into the second period, Hibs were presented with a chance to double their advantage, but a superb tackle from Eddie Barry denied Eoin Daly.
Minutes later; Josh Martin got his head to Tadgh Bradley’s free kick, but could not keep his effort on target.
And when Dara Fehily found a way through, he was denied by a sharp intervention from Dean Cronin.
A terrific effort from a free kick followed from Tadgh Bradley which saw Steven Murphy stretch to tip over for a corner.
Then, Dara Fehily found a way through, but a superb tackle from Corey Griffin came to Hibs’ rescue.
Coachford B were pressing hard now at this point for an equaliser and from a ball that bounced near the edge of the box, Nathan Martin looped his effort over.
A chance did fall for Coachford B soon after – Dara Fehily played a lovely ball into space for Daniel O’Leary, but he dragged his effort inches wide of the far post.
Another chance fell for O’Leary minutes later, but once again, he failed to take advantage before a turn and strike by Dara Fehily went straight into the arms of Steven Murphy.
But, just as the tie started to run towards its final moments, Dara Fehily found the far corner from a cross to force the tie into extra time at 1-1.
So, it was on to the first period of extra time with the first chance falling to Coachford – Dara Fehily took a steadying touch before bringing a fine save from Steven Murphy with a stinging effort.
A terrific chance then fell for Daniel O’Leary when he received a glorious ball from Brendan Harrington, but he scooped over near goal.
In the second period then, Dara Fehily’s cross reached Jamie Walsh, who glanced his effort wide before Coachford B ran out 15-14 winners in what was an extraordinary penalty shoot-out in the end.
