Neither side could be separated as Springfield and Knocknaheeny Celtic battled out a hard-earned 2-2 draw in their weekend Premier clash at St Colman’s Park.

A stalemate was arguably the fairest outcome of a highly competitive fixture that saw both teams pass up some opportunities to snatch victory.

The game burst into life and when the ball broke in a good position for Josh Furmedge, he failed to find the target.

Then, from a long kick-out, Kian Greene was available in space, but failed to get his shot away with conviction.

At the other end, Kyle Cummins cut in from the right before drilling goalwards, only to see Ryan McCarthy make a save with his feet.

A terrific chance then fell for Springers when Kyle Cummins found his way in on a one on one with Ryan McCarthy, but the Knocknaheeny keeper was up to the task and made a solid save with his feet.

Knocknaheeny went in front soon after – Scott Buckley O’Sullivan drilled a forceful effort which saw Cormac Brennan parry, but when the ball broke eventually for Scott Buckley O’Sullivan to give him a second bite of the cherry, he drilled low and hard into the corner on just six minutes.

But, this lead was short-lived when Springers’ Kyle Cummins found the target with a fine finish to restore parity three minutes later.

Cummins had a chance then to get a second, but from Patrick Fingleton’s cross, he glanced his header inches wide before Jamie Mason brought a decent save from Cormac Brennan with a low effort.

A lovely ball over the top by Patrick Fingleton played in Kyle Cummins, who guided past Ryan McCarthy to fire the hosts 2-1 in front on 24.

Another chance fell for Springfield, but when Kyle Cummins cushioned a pass on for Caylum Geaney, he rifled a rasping effort narrowly over.

It was end to end stuff now and when Kian Greene collected from a diagonal ball, he was denied when his low effort came back off the upright.

But, a lovely turn-and-strike by Jordan Cuff torpedoed into the top corner to make it honours even once again on 30.

The match maintained its frantic ebb and flow, with both sides beginning to carve out clear-cut chances and when Theo Foley saw his looping free kick bounce off the bar to safety, Wayne O’Leary tested Cormac Brennan with a stinging effort.

The second half kicked off with Scott Buckley O’Sullivan collecting from Wayne O’Leary’s free-kick before seeing his looping effort bounce off the bar to safety.

And when Patrick Fingleton fed Kyle Cummins, he drilled straight at McCarthy before Colm Healy scooped over at the other end.

The threats at both ends continued as Caylum Geaney fired a terrific effort narrowly past the post.

Then, after good work by Kyle Cummins, the ball broke for Aaron Cahill, but he was unable to make the opportunity count.

Another chance came by when Patrick Fingleton was alone when a cross came to him, but he headed straight at McCarthy, shortly before the final whistle.
