Canovee had been here before, holding a narrow lead in injury time of a low-scoring McCarthy Insurance Group Premier JFC final.

In 2024, the concession of a late goal to neighbours Kilmurry; this time, a collective defensive effort ensured that Cobh could not fashion an equaliser, with full-back and joint-captain Liam Kelleher capping a fine display as he forced a turnover at the death.

The strong wind made matters difficult for both sides but ultimately Canovee’s impressive third quarter – which should probably have yielded a goal – was the winning of the game for them.

Down by one at half-time, 0-6 to 0-5, the mid-Cork side fell further behind in the nascent stages of the second half but thereafter they began to slowly assert their superiority.

Following a nice Daire McMahon point, the same player was the target for a measured delivery by sub Seán O’Connor – the lay-off to Evan Dodd was perfect but the latter was unfortunate to spill the ball over the goal-line when a green flag seemed inevitable.

Further goal opportunities presented themselves without being taken, interspersed with points: James Moynihan set up Jack Kelleher for a levelling score before influential wing-back Eoghan Lehane saw his shot blocked on the line by Cobh captain Seán Cummins.

That led to a 45, converted by Evan Dodd and on the three-quarter mark they again went close to netting – McMahon’s low shot from the left was slightly off-target and Odhran O’Driscoll was unlucky in not being able to turn it in at the far post.

Corner-back Patrick Buckley and then wing-back O’Driscoll pushed them three ahead with fine points within a minute of each other – they proved to be their final scores.

Cobh did end what had become an 18-minute spell without a score as Eoin Cullimore sent over a free but could not immediately take advantage of further pressure.

They were within a point thanks to Adam McCarthy, but that was as close as they got and Canovee claimed the Donal Hurley Cup.

In the first half, Cobh had the considerable elements behind them but four early long-range shots were wayward – they would end the half leading, but with fewer attempts on goal than their opponents.

After Canovee managed to a handle at midfield, with Aidan Murphy to the fore, they showed signs of being able to work the ball well through the Cobh defence and James Moynihan might have been in for a goal chance but good George Keating defending denied him.

Even so, incisive deliveries were reaping rewards, with Eoghan Lehane’s nice pass allowing Daire McMahon to put them 0-3 to 0-1 in front before Connor O’Neill added another point on the quarter-hour.

Timmy Wilk, who scored Cobh’s first point, brought them back to within one with a two-pointer before Lehane replied and Canovee almost opened up a five-point lead on 25 minutes as a well-worked move led to an Aidan Murphy chance but Ed Walsh saved bravely.

Following a counter-attack, Cobh’s Adam Doran pointed and they had the half-time lead as Cullimore’s shot from all of 50 metres flew over the bar.

Evan Cummins did extend the lead after the restart but from there Canovee got on top.
