Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG An Mhainistir Thuaidh 1-16

Tomás Ó Mainnín was incredibly proud of the effort put in by Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG An Mhainistir Thuaidh in their narrow defeat to Ardscoil Rís in the TUS Dr Harty Cup first round in Castlelyons on Friday.

Having come from six behind, they they tried so hard to grab an equalising goal in second-half stoppage, and while they came agonizingly close, it was without success.

“They gave us absolutely everything,” he said.

“Really proud of the character and bravery they showed against an excellent team of intercounty minors and U20s.

“We had eight weeks of intensive preparation with a fantastic set of committed players.”

Shane Waters’ eighth point in the 56th minute put the Limerick school six clear but Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG kept fighting and late points from Micheál Mac An Ghaill, Callum Ó Cofaigh and Darragh De Barra made for a down-to-the-wire conclusion.

In a dramatic finish and backed by the strong breeze, the Cork side pumped ball after ball into the Ardscoil Rís danger area, but it was in vain, thanks to courageous defending.

With a large number of players departed from last season and without their injured captain Ryan Ó Cróinín of Na Piarsiagh, they were full value for a 0-4 apiece score at the beginning of the second quarter.

It was at this point Ardscoil Rís, who now join St Joseph’s CBS Nenagh as frontrunners in Group 2, began to take control.

Tempers flared and referee Cathal McAllister showed yellow cards to Jack Ó Cathaláin and Rowan Collins.

A run of points by Gavin O’Brien, Eamon O’Sullivan, David Moran, Waters and Alex Kearns enabled Ardscoil Rís lead by double scores approaching half time.

Callum Barrett’s monster strike and Kearns’ second left them 0-13 to 0-6 ahead at the break.

Callum Ó Cofaigh made up five of his team’s total.

Marquee forward Ó Cofaigh worked tirelessly, and along with U17s Evan Swan Kent, Micheál Mac An Ghaill and Séamas Ó Meachair, they refused to throw in the towel.

The margin remained at seven at the three-quarter mark, but when Ó Cofaigh did well to squeeze the ball into the net after a long Gabhan Ó Ceallacháin free in the 47th minute, the AG were back in business, 0-19 to 1-13.

Ardscoil Rís needed outstanding defending to stay a goal to the good.

Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG An Mhainistir Thuaidh will be boosted by this performance ahead of their next round against defending champions Nenagh CBS.

Ardscoil Rís, meanwhile take on Midleton CBS.
