Frewen Cup: Killorglin far too strong for young Rochestown side

This opening round Munster Colleges Frewen Cup clash between Intermediate School Killorglin and St Francis College Rochestown was one way traffic for 50 minutes at Ballyvourney on Wednesday morning with the Kerry school dominating from the very outset.

Killorglin had a powerful middle third diamond of Ben O’Shea at centre back, towering midfielders Eoin Casey and Adam Galvin, with Luke Foley on the forty ensuring that a younger looking Roco side were never in with a shout.

After a nervous opening quarter, Killorglin had 1-2 on board with points from Foley and Darragh McKenna and a goal that was a long delivery from Eoin Casey which hit the post and went into the net off the head of the unfortunate keeper, Daniel Mooney. The goalkeeper made contact with the post and he had to retire with a gash on his head. Roco hardly raised a gallop for the rest of the half, against the wind.

Killorglin, with McKenna and Kieran Patton causing all sorts of problems in the inside line, were gifted another goal when a Patton two-point attempt dropped under Sean Barriscale’s crossbar and keeper, possibly blinded by the sun, allowed the ball drop into the net.

Patton added a point and a two from Ben O’Shea and a white flag from Lachlan Scannell saw ISK move 2-6 to 0-1 clear. It got worse before half-time for Roco when Paddy O’Sullivan landed a massive two-pointer while Kieran Stack raised a white flag for the Cork school, who had a mountain to climb in the second half as they trailed 2-8 to 0-2 at the interval.

Two early second half points from Foley and a free from Casey saw Killorglin move out of sight and while Rochestown did keep trying, it was clear that they were being outclassed and outsmarted in most areas of the pitch.

Three points from James Rooney off the bench further widened the gap between the protagonists, despite the battling qualities displayed by Kieran Stack, Cillian McCarthy and Daniel O’Riordan.

ISK were coasting on 50 minutes leading 2-14 to 0-6 and they then conceded two soft goals to Cian O’Neill and O’Riordan but it was mere consolation stuff as ISK advanced to face Tralee CBS in the quarter-finals.
