Premier JHC: Momentum with Cloughduv ahead of Barryroe quarter-final

Cloughduv’s championship story has taken a timely turn.

A crucial final group win over Milford two weeks ago has changed everything, a result that lifted the Muskerry side out of danger and into the knockout stages of the Co-Op SuperStores Premier JHC.

After two opening defeats left them bottom of Group 2 and facing the real threat of a relegation play-off, Tim Barry-Murphy’s men produced exactly the response required. 

Now they move forward with purpose, preparing to meet Barryroe in Saturday’s quarter-final in Enniskeane at 4pm.

The pressure they were under heading into that Milford game was significant. Losses to St Catherine's and Tracton had left Cloughduv in a very tricky spot. 

They were widely viewed as contenders in this grade after their relegation from the IAHC in 2024, but the opening rounds this year had been punishing. Barry-Murphy’s side hurled in patches, yet they struggled to sustain momentum.

The Milford win changed the story. Younger players emerging from a strong underage system added pace and energy, while experienced operators steadied the ship. It was collective, it was disciplined, and it arrived at the moment they needed it most.

Qualification is more than a reprieve; it is an opportunity. Cloughduv now have a chance to push on. 

Saturday’s quarter-final against Barryroe will be a different challenge, not least because Barryroe will arrive determined to flip the script after watching Cloughduv surge past Milford. 

Barry-Murphy’s men know that the standard they set two weeks ago must be their baseline.

If they can replicate the display shown in the Milford win, they will be well-placed. Knockout hurling is unforgiving as we all know, but it is also an opportunity — and Cloughduv have given themselves one.

Two weeks ago, the conversation centred on relegation jeopardy. Now it centres on possibility. Cloughduv have steadied themselves, earned their place in the quarter-finals, and know that the next 60 minutes can redefine their season.

They have been here before. They know what it takes. And they know that Saturday is a chance to push on.
