Colin Walsh set to lead Kanturk charge in showdown with Aghabullogue

Colin Walsh has been one of those Kanturk footballers you notice early and keep noticing.

Even at underage, when Kanturk were competitive across the grades, he stood out for his athleticism, his timing, and the way he saw a game developing before others did. 

Tall, mobile and confident on the ball, he always looked like someone who could push on. 

At over 6 ft 3, with the frame and stride to match, he has the physical profile you’d associate with a player capable of stepping into a higher level. I’ve long felt he’s someone who could be good enough for the Cork footballers if he keeps progressing.

Walsh usually operates around the half-forward line, and it suits him. He has the engine to get up and down the pitch, the height to compete for kick-outs, and the football to link play.

Sunday in Macroom is exactly the type of day where he becomes central. Kanturk face Aghabullogue in the McCarthy Insurance Group SAFC Group 1 Round 3 at 2pm, and while they sit on three points, they’re not safe yet. 

Denis Hurley will go through the permutations, but the short version is straightforward: Kanturk need a result. 

A defeat, combined with a winner in the other game between Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh and Dohenys, would leave them missing out on the head-to-head to Aghabullogue. 

It’s a tight group, and Kanturk know they can’t afford to leave the door open.

If Kanturk are to get the job done on Sunday, Walsh will be key. Aghabullogue bring energy and confidence under Ray Keane, and they won’t fear anyone. 

While Kanturk have plenty of good footballers, Walsh is a player I admire and will be crucial at the weekend.
