Robbie Cotter's influence growing by the game

Blackrock head into Sunday’s final Group 1 game of the Co-Op SuperStores Premier SHC knowing exactly what’s required. 

A positive result against Kanturk in Mourneabbey (4pm) will secure progression and keep their season moving in the right direction. 

The Rockies have taken down Glen Rovers and then Fr O’Neill’s, results that have put them in a position where their fate remains in their own hands.

One of the central figures has been Robbie Cotter, whose form has sharpened noticeably across the campaign. Cotter struck 3-2 in that victory over Fr O’Neill’s. 

For a player who was previously part of the Cork senior panel, and who was ultimately released from the setup, this season has always carried an added edge. 

There is a point to prove, and Cotter is making it. His movement inside, his willingness to take on defenders, and his ability to finish clinically have given the Rockies a focal point that opposition teams are struggling to contain.

He’s hurling with intent, with a bit of bite, and with the kind of consistency that forces inter-county conversations back into the frame. If he continues on this trajectory, he will inevitably come under the eye of Ben O’Connor again as Cork look towards 2027.

For now, though, Blackrock’s focus is entirely on Kanturk. The Duhallow side have shown plenty of resilience across the group and remain capable of unsettling anyone on their day. 

Their mix of experience and height means they won’t arrive as passengers. Kanturk’s ability to stay in games, even when under pressure, has been one of their strengths, and Blackrock will be wary of allowing them any early foothold.

The Rockies’ defence has been a strong point this year, most notably when they were down to 14 men against the Glen. They will need that again here.

Cotter’s form will naturally draw attention, but Blackrock will know that collective discipline is what gets teams through tight championship days. 

Sunday offers an opportunity to progress, to build momentum, and for Cotter to continue a season that already feels like a statement.
